Abstract

At Grohote, isl. Šolta, the 1679 Matricula of St. Stephen’s brotherhood written in Croatian has been preserved. It contains 33 chapters (capitula) defining the obligations and privileges of its brethren. These chapters refer to, mainly, their mutual behaviour, common obligations regarding church holidays, help in misfortune and illness, funeral of a brother or of some of his family, election of the district-prefect, and to other items needed in the organization of the way of life in a community. This Matricula has also another value, i.e., its ikavian dialect of the Croatian language using Italian ortography of 17th century. The Matricula of the St. Sacrament from 1845, written also in Croatian, was added at the end so that the spellings in 17th and 19th centuries can be compared.
