Abstract
This paper presents an analysis of the existing traffic situation and a description of the existing
road infrastructure in Međimurje County, as the baseline for the future planning of traffic and transport
infrastructure. The general objective of the paper is to establish optimal organisation and function of road traffic in the county, and to improve the functional and economic efficacy of the entire county transport system, to increase the safety of all transport participants and to improve protection of the environment from the harmful effects of transport. The specific aim of this paper is to propose the development of the county road network, with the proposal of the construction of new roads (state, county and local roads) and to improve other roads and to build new structures (bridges, etc.). In order to meet these objectives, traffic counts were conducted and those involved in road planning were surveyed. The existing traffic plans and current transport demands in the county were analysed, along with the transport demand forecasts for the future and the demographic analysis of the county, and other facts that influence an increase in transport demand. These were the entry parameters for drafting a development proposal for the county transport network over the next twenty year period. Proposals were given in stages and were based on four priorities.
