Abstract

Blaž Sidineo from Zadar, a doctor of both laws and a Zadar canon, was the bishop of Rab from 1567 to 1583. During this period the apostolic visitor and the bishop of Verona Agostino Valier paid a call to his bishopric. Bishop Sidineo founded the Benedictine nunnery of St Justine in Rab for girls from non-noble families while his efforts to put in safekeeping relics of the saints and documents pertaining to the history of Rab rightly make him the founder of the Rab archive. The State Archive in Zadar (Documents of the Rab notaries) possesses three inventories of Sidineo’s movable property which were written immediately before and after the bishop’s death. The article separates those elements of the bishop’s inventory which were used by him placing a special emphasis on the objects of artistic handiwork. In conclusion the author maintains that bishop Sidineo, although he cannot perhaps be held to be the central figure of Dalmatian church history of the second part of the XVIth century, is nevertheless an important figure in the history of the Rab bishopric and the city of Rab and that additional research is necessary to illuminate his life. The supplement to the article brings a copy of Sidineo’s inventory from 1584.
