Molecular Graphs with Minimal and Maximal Randić Indices

Abstract

The Randić index χ is the sum of the terms 1/√(δ(u)δ(v)) over all pairs of adjacent vertices, where δ stands for the degree of the respective vertex of the respective molecular graph. We determine the (n,m)~ molecular graphs (i.e., connected graphs with n vertices, m edges, n - 1 < m < 2n, and maximal vertex degree not exceeding 4), having the greatest possible and the smallest possible Randić indices.
