Abstract

The archaeological site AS 8 Beli Manastir – Atar, Napuštene njive, which, according to the reference in the professional literature stretches between chainages 0+700.00 – 1+200.00, lies on the route of the future motorway A5 Beli Manastir – Osijek – Svilaj, the Beli Manastir – Osijek section. Before works on the future motorway could proceed it was necessary to determine the extent of the previously documented archaeological site within the planned surface by means of trial trenches, in order to create a plan and project for the entire rescue archaeological excavation at the site.
Between 15th and 17th October 2013, the Institute of Archaeology in Zagreb carried out trial archaeological investigations at the site AS 8 – Beli Manastir–Atar, Napuštene njive, situated in the Beli Manastir Municipality, in the Osijek-Baranja County.
The field surveys in the 1960s and late 1980s pointed to Beli Manastir as a potential archaeological site, yielding potsherds from Prehistory, Roman period and the Middle Ages.
The archaeological investigations covered 1678 m2 and documented 17 stratigraphic units (SU 001–017), consisting of layers and fills. Movable archaeological finds were collected from the surface of documented archaeological contexts.
The trial archaeological excavation at the AS 8 Beli Manastir – Atar, Napuštene njive site, that is, between the chainages 0+700.00–1+200.00, carried out in October 2013 by trial trenches with a view to determining the nature and extent of the archaeological site yielded the following results: on the route of the connecting road, between the chainages 0+700.00 – 1+200.00, to where the test trenches were excavated, the entire documented area yielded several archaeological contexts and a number of potsherds from the surface, making it necessary to investigate that part of the terrain by archaeological methods. (Trenches 1 and 3).
