Abstract
In 2012, while digging a well in the north-western part of their land at Vukšićev breg in Krapina, the Barušić family came across layers of burning and fragments of ceramic vessels. While digging deep around a hundred metres away, at the edge of their orchard, they came across wellpreserved timber remains of a structure.
The Institute of Archaeology carried out rescue archaeological excavations at the north-western position, where trench 1 and trench 2 were excavated (these were merged into a single trench). The excavation at the south-eastern position was cleaned and documented and named as trench 3.
The results of archaeological investigations in trenches 1 and 2 point to the existence of a timber structure erected at the foot of the terrace on the southern slope of the Vukšić hill during the 15th and the beginning of the 16th century. The area covered by the archaeological investigation was insufficiently large to allow an assessment of the original surface of the timber structure or the method of its construction, apart from the evident fact that it was built of timber and coated with daub. The find in trench 3 consists of the remains of a timber structure that could be interpreted as a wood-lined building, presumably a cellar, dug deep in the ground, or a wooden well. Although the insufficiently large surface does not allow a final interpretation, and the date remains open, the find presumably belongs to a post-medieval period.
