Abstract

Principles of comprehensive rehabilitation are universal and can be employed in all kind of disabilities, rheumatic diseases included. They are presented in ICF model that elaborates the bio - psycho - social approach to rehabilitation. Amongst seronegative pondyloarthopathies, ankylosing spondyltis is a disease that requires the most intensive rehabilitation. In our hospital it is conducted interdisciplinary by
a team of experts as a part of medical treatment. The team consists of the following permanent members: physioterapist, occupational therapist, nurse in rehabilitation and physician (physiathrist - rheumatologist) as the team leader. Occasionally, when needed, doctors of other medical profiles are included in the team, such as:
physicians of another specialty, (orthopedist, internist, neurologist), psyhologist and social worker. The members of the team attend a meeting every week. The most significant aspect of rehabilitation process in Rheumatology is keeping functional status at the highest level possible. In range of physical therapy we use exercise
therapy (both indoors and in swimming pools), electrotherapy and balneotherapy. The aim of occupational therapy is to educate the patient in proper conducting of ADL activities. Educational and motivational role of all members of the team is highly
important in the process of therapy, as it is necessary to ensure patient’s regular exercise. Swimming is the most recommended form of exercise/recreation.
