Abstract

: Industrial wastewater presents significant environmental issue due to the content of persistent and toxic compounds so it cannot be discharged into the natural recipients without prior adequate treatment. Since none of available wastewater treatment methods is ideal, i.e. with certain advantages they have limitations of the application, so they can be combined in the so called integrated processes. In this work for the treatment of industrial wastewater generated in the processes of exhaust gasses purification (EG), as potentially efficient treatment methods for such type of industrial wastewater, the application of the coagulation/flocculation, adsorption as well as its combined use have been studied. As coagulants/flocculants aluminium sulphate and ferric chloride were examined and activated carbon as adsorbent. The quality of the treated water was estimated on the basis of the determination of the turbidity extent and total organic carbon content. As the optimal parameters of the integrated process in EG wastewater treatment, concentration of ferric chloride of 0.37 mmol/dm3 and pH 5 were chosen. In this case 97 % of the turbidity and 9.2 % of the total organic carbon have been removed. This wastewater has been subjected to the final treatment step by the adsorption using 0.1 g/dm3 of activated carbon whereas 91.3 % of the turbidity and 12.8 % of total organic carbon content in comparison with initial parameters were removed after 30 minutes.
