Abstract

Gdinj lies on the plateau on the eastern part of the island of Hvar. The number of its inhabitants was mentioned for the first time in 1579. The census of the inhabitants of Hvar, carried out in 1673 to supply them with salt, shows that Gdinj had 151 inhabitants living in 25 families. The parish registers of births, marriages and deaths from 1745 to the end of 18th century reveal series of data on the lives of its population occupied with agriculture, their marriages into the neighbouring villages, births and deaths, leaving behind traces of their lives until today. The first parish registers were started by the parish priest Stjepan Milošević from Jelsa, who filled the first few pages with his own verses on marriages, births and deaths revealing thus another unknown poet from Hvar.
