Abstract

By the beginning of 19th century the migrating population of Dalmatia, theEuropean countries increased the mechanic influx of Split’s inhabitants. These settlers were of various professions: physicians, artisans, administrative employees, musical teachers, soldiers, seamen, merchants, innkeepers, domestic staffs and working people for different service companies needed in a town. This influx of immigrants can be judged from the 1808’s census wen the town had 5.955 inhabitants, in 1810 it counted 6.734 and in 1857 it already had 16.745 inhabitants. A large number of their surnames have been forgotten, some immigrants do not know their, origin, while some of them keep still the tradition of their ancestors.
