Abstract

Although the sun is the source of life, today it is generally known that exaggerated exposure leads to immunosuppression, rapid aging and skin cancer. However, the undesired effects of sunlight to our skin, especially of ultraviolet rays are a huge matter of discussion. Recently, the issue of harmful impact of the infrared rays, as well as the visible light has been brought up as serious topic. In this article, the author emphasizes the most important facts about the sunlight and its effects on the skin, as well as the measures of adequate protection, the role of vitamin D and antioxidants in photo protection. Special attention will be drawn to sunscreen products, their classification, clear instructions for use and the undesired effects of their application. It should be stressed out that photo protection is a set of protective measures that shields us from excessive exposure to sunlight in order to prevent rapid skin aging and skin cancer later in life. These measures include avoiding direct sun exposure between ten AM and four PM, wearing protective clothes, hats, caps, sunglasses and application of sunscreens. We emphasise that everyday application of sunscreens is not the first line defense against sunlight and it does not protect from photo damage neither it allows longer outdoor activities.
