Abstract

Entrepreneurs and SMEs owned by them have always been regarded as the main drivers of the employment and the economy as a whole. Their main characteristics have been proactivity, flexibility and reactivity, which have always differentiated them from large companies. However, the development of small and medium businesses brought about the challenge of survival and/or further growth of their companies for which enthusiasm, willingness to take risks, and flexibility are no longer enough. More and more attention is being paid to the development of fundamental knowledge and managerial skills, as well as programs which can enable entrepreneurs to properly manage the growth and development of their businesses. The knowledge and skills required vary depending on the company’s development stage. We have become witnesses of how the need for specific knowledge and skills changes over time, closely connected with the company’s maturity phase and the position of the entrepreneur within the company itself.
