Abstract

The Beneventan chant, preserved only in fragmentary form, did not employ the eight-mode octoechos system known to us from Franco-Roman chant. Within a single set of musical procedures — we might say a single mode — most pieces end on what we transcribe as A, while some end a step lower, on G. Study of the surviving psalmody suggest the use of three reciting notes, on C, D, or E.
