Abstract

North Atlantic Oscillation (NAO) has a distinct influence on the climate characteristics in Europe, as well on Croatia. Since the surface, due to its physical properties has a longer response time, there is a possible time delayed influence of the NAO event. In this paper, we
examined correlation of winter NAO events and soil temperatures in the subsequent seasons in Croatia for the period between 1961-2012. The results show that there is such a correlation betweenjanuary NAO and soil temperature during the spring period. Even though the correlation is relatively weak, it is apparent and statistically significant at all depths. The effect of depth on the correlation indicates a certain non-linearity. The results also point to a possible
spatial distribution of the effect of the NAO oscillation, which is most likely caused by the characteristics of the soil and local influence.
