Abstract

The paper critically analyzes and explains various contemporary forms of literacy put in information and technology related context of life and work. Since these are related but diverse concepts, their similarities and differences are highlighted, and the mutual relations between them are outlined. Information literacy is identified as the most important form of contemporary literacy incorporating all other forms. The basic elements of information literacy include constructed knowledge and developed skills through which an individual is able to adequately identify their information needs, locate and assess the quality of the information and its source, to store and reuse information in an efficient and ethical manner and, ultimately, to use the information to create, apply and communicate new knowledge. The ultimate goal is to create a critical and creative basis for further use of information knowledge and skills in the educational, professional and civic life.
