Abstract

This article has been focused on the etymology of the coastal toponyms of Romance origin on the island of Žirje. For some of the names, new etymological solutions have been proposed while those missing from the onomastic literature are being studied for the first time. The results are based on research field trips, by interviewing local inhabitants as well as by consulting old land registries and nautical charts. The study includes the toponyms of the Pre-Croatian and Dalmato-Roman period (i.e. Bȃkul, Balkũn, Gãrmica, Guštȅranski, Mirȉne, Šepurȉna), those from the period of the Venetian reign in Dalmatia (i.e Lantẽrna, Pijȁti, Škrvãda, Mažȉrina) as well as those that are combined and that contain both Romance and Croatian elements. The toponyms discussed bear witness to the Romanic and Slavic communities on the island.
