Abstract

Beginning with the second half of the nineteenth century, Pola / Pula underwent a period of true renewal completely related to the affirmation of its extraordinary military value, its mighty arsenal, its particularly well-known military plants and strong fortifications defending the entire town, with most of its naval fleet moored within its gulf. The city became an exceptionally great military post, an urban centre of strategic importance, the most important naval base of war marina in the entire Adriatic and among the biggest ones in the Mediterranean.
