Abstract

The paper deals with geographical names (toponyms) on maps of Croatia published during the 16th and 17th century. Since this is a very complex problem area, only a few basic problems concerning the historical development of toponyms on old maps have been emphasized. As a result of the general development in cartography and "crystallization" of geographical knowledge about Croatia in the 16th century, these maps have become a valuable source of toponyms. Although Latin, Italian and German toponyms were still dominant, more and more Croatian toponyms can be found, especially on maps made by Croatian authors or the authors who were familiar with Croatian regions. Toponymy on old maps of Croatia considerably reflects the significance of Croatian regions in trading and geo-strategic system in Europe at the time.
