Abstract
A significant decline of the trade union impact society is widespread all over the world. One of the union revitalization strategies proposed is the development of competent union leaders. Namely, in turbulent times for unions, union leaders should be able to do the turnaround – to introduce changes in union thinking and acting. In the theoretical part of the paper desirable characteristics of contemporary leaders are described – both demographic and leadership style characteristics, while in the empirical part of the paper, using 360 degree scheme, different labor relations stakeholders’ perceptions (managers, human resource experts, employees, trade union officials (in organizations and in trade union federations), government representatives) about union leaders being the key for union failure (or success) are assessed.
