Abstract

In this lecture we briefly review our understanding of surface forces with adsorbed, neutral flexible polymer chains, and describe some recent studies of surface forces with a range of end-grafted chains. In the latter case we find the polymer layers to be approximately twice the thickness of adsorbed layers of comparable size and surf ace-exess; we find that the interactions are monotonically repulsive and rate-independent at all surface coverages. Our results are compared with both scaling and mean- field models. and are in very good qualitative and quantitative agreement with both theoretical approaches.
