Abstract

Addressed in the paper is the occurrence of dog bites as a frequent type of occupational injury in universal postal services. An analysis of this type of injury over five years is provided in the introductory sections. The obtained results were then used to propose suitable protection measures for delivery personnel (postmen, couriers, etc.). Following the implementation of the proposed measures, a survey was conducted among postal delivery personnel to determine the efficacy of these measures. Statistical analysis showed that the measures were only partly efficient in actual implementation, and improvements were suggested to protect postal service workers from dog bites. Subsequently, reported dog bite injuries were analysed after implementation of these improved measures. However, further investigation is recommended. In conclusion, the paper states that the proposed and implemented measures are in essence adequate and have had positive results. Advances are recommended (organisational, technical and educational) to raise the level of protection for postal service workers from dog bite injuries sustained during work.
