Abstract

The author publishes a number of archival materials on the inhabitansts of Vrboska on the island of Hvar starting from the first records at the beginning of 15th century until the preserved registers of births, marriages and deaths of the second half of 17th century. The registers give the surnames, immigrations, marriages, growth and mortality of the inhabitants and their professions. By basing it on these data it can be concluded that at that time Vrboska lived an urban way of life even though it had only about six hundred inhabitants by the end of 18th century. Their occupations were different crfts, trade and seamanship rather than farming, their wealth is seen in the devolopment of their place, acquisition of works of art by famous Venetian painters, and ecclesiastical silver. All this shows the cultural level and breadth of the inhabitants of this small but important place on the island of Hvar.
