Abstract

Organic chlorine compounds come into being during the numerous industrial processes, burning processes, and garbage incineration. They present a potential health risk arising from their high persistence and toxic effects. Numerous studies of the last twenty years have confirmed their harmful influence on men's health, as early as in the foetal stage of develompent. Eating habits, inhalation, and chlorinated water are the most important ways for organic clore compounds to enter into the organism. Although it has been already attested that organic chlorine compounds are highly toxic, their production has not yet been stopped. Moreover, they are still massively used, especially in pulp and paper production, and chlorination of water. In addition to this, garbage incineration is becoming an even more important method of garbage recycling, although it is the largest source of emission of the most toxic organic chlorine compound – 2, 3, 7, 8 – TCDD.
