Abstract

Various authors have completely opposite standpoints regarding the transitional
vertebra and spina bifida oculta in the lumbar pain. The causative link has not been
completely solved until today.ln clinical work l have observed thai the static disorder is
rather frequent in patients with transitionaf vertebra or spina bifida oculta. Moreover, by
monitoring standard x-ray findings I have noticad that the rotation of the lumbar vertebrae
usually accompanies such disorders. On the basis of these findings l have made
radiological and clinical study including 180 patients with lumbar pain and verified
transitional vertebra or spina bifida oculta.More than 90% of the exarninees had clear signs
of lurnbar rotation on the x-ray. Almost all the patients had clinical signs of a statical disorder as well. On the basis of the investigation it can be concluded that the spinal
deviation and asymmetrical loading of its structures are the pri mary causes of lumbar pain
in patients with the transitional vertebra or spina bifida oeulta.Probably, these congenital
malformations have no eli ni cal relevance without the accoompanying rotation of the lurnbar
vertebrae.
