Abstract

·n,e purpose of this invc~t igation was to s tudy test - rctcst re liability of three
techniques used in the measurement of lumbosacral ROM in the sagital plane. The
protoCClls that wc examined were a) modified modified Schoher (MMS) test, b) double
Hlclinomctcr (Dl) technique. :.111d e) Back Range of Motion (BROM). The MMS is called a
skin distraction technique because the distance between two reference points is measured in
both standing and forward bcnding posturcs. Dl and BROM measurements are also made
from these posturcs, however, in the a) Dl one inclinometcr is placed over the sacrum and
:1 second is place over the TI2Ll junction and b) BROM a single inclinometer is placed
over S l and skin distraction is measured with a sliding ann. lntraclass correlation
coefficicnts (ICC) were computed with two populations. All three tests were administred to
59 subjects (32 female and 29 male, ages 17-71) differing in health (36 individuals without
LBP and 23 with LBP). The I CC'~ for flcxion and extension ROM were a) MMS = 0.92
and O.IJ2, b) Dl = 0.96 and 0.96 and e) BROM = 0.91:1 an 0.94 (only degree
measurements were made for group l usin the BROM). The BROM was also used to
measure lumbosacral ROM on J 17 unive rsity students (58 female and 59 male, ages 17 to
40). The ICC's for this administration on group ll subjects were 0.85 (degree) and 0.94
40). The ICC's for this administration on group II subjects were 0.85 (degree) and 0.94
(cm). Subsequently the MMS, DI and BROM were administred to 53 healthy university
students (25 female and 28 male, ages 17 to 30). The JCC's for flexion and extension
ROM for group . Ill subjects were a) MMS = 0.98 and 0.94, b) Dl = 0.95 and 0.87 and
e) BROM = 0,85 (degrees) and 0.95 (cm) and BROM = 0.83 (degrees) and 0.98 (cm).
Our research suggests that good reliability can be attained with any of these ROM
protocols.
