Abstract

The article discusses digitization-on-demand as a library service and as a work process, analysing its implementation at national libraries. First it presents the guidelines for digitization-on-demand issued by OCLC in 2011, which provide a detailed description of the process, followed by an analysis of the digitization-on-demand service and the way in which it is delivered from the user’s perspective at five national libraries. The aim of the analysis is to identify the services offered within the framework of digitization-on-demand, to find out how they are being implemented, and how to inform the users about the procedures of writing or filling in the demand forms. Based on good practice examples, the paper also shows how the digitisationon- demand service should be organised, pointing out the importance of providing detailed instructions about filling in the digitization-on-demand form which would help both users and librarians in the implementation of the digitisation-on-demand service.
