Abstract

Urinary tract infections (UTIs) are one of the most common and most important health problems in women of reproductive age. Uropathogenic Escherichia coli (UPEC) is responsible for about 90% of the UTIs. In addition to the mechanisms of UPEC virulence itself, defensive immune mechanisms are responsible for the development of the disease as well, about which very little is known. Although innate immune reactions include a number of important factors, here we give a brief overview of immune reactions to UPEC, related to the Toll like receptors (TRL), pentraxin 3 (PTX3) and natural killer (NK) cells, for which, in recent years, significant scientific breakthroughs have been described in the literature, that in the relatively near future could have a significant practical value in diagnostics and treatment of patients with infections caused by UPEC.
