Abstract
In 2013 there have been several local programs that promote and encourage reading to babies and toddlers in Croatia, but there is still no joint project or campaign at a national level. That is why the Commission for Library Services for Children and Young Adults of the Croatian Library Association (CLA) has initiated the first national campaign to promote reading aloud to children from birth. The Commission has brought forward the proposal to the potential partners (librarians, pediatricians, various organizations interacting with children and those dealing with the rights of the child from an early age) to start a campaign together on the occasion of the European Year of Reading Aloud (2013). The value of the campaign is based on the synergy and partnership of several professional associations that collaborate, share information and ideas to ensure the achievement of the objectives of the campaign. This paper will point out the importance of early and family literacy, provide a brief overview of the national programs around the world, and projects that promote reading to children from birth and initiatives for empowering parents. It will also present several examples of local programs in Croatia, the first Croatian national campaign for reading aloud to children from birth Read to me!, and the activities during the past year. The authors point out the importance of teamwork and innovative approach in conducting the campaign, the concept of unity and cooperation among organizations based on responsibility, decision-making, and volunteer work as a possible way of thinking, organizing and implementing the CLA projects.
