Innovations in libraries – case study of the Public Library “Fran Galović” Koprivnica

Abstract
The creating of innovation culture is the basis for a competitive advantage and one of the benchmarks of success both in profit and non-profit business environment. The concept of a learning organization is a possible platform for creating an organizational culture that encourages creativity and innovations of its employees in order to meet the challenges of the modern society and the immediate work environment. The Public Library "Fran Galović" Koprivnica is the winner of several prestigious domestic and foreign professional awards for innovative library projects and programs. The paper will present the practice in this library, illustrate what is innovative in contemporary librarianship, and how innovations in libraries can contribute to the quality of daily life of the citizens and the development of society in general. The first part of the paper presents basic ideas and concepts of innovation management and learning organization, emphasizing that they are the tools in the management of turbulent changes in modern society and in the immediate work environment. The second part presents the examples of innovative programs and projects in the Koprivnica public library that have been initiated as a contribution to solving social problems and the commitment to support the better quality of life in the community under the motto "The library is more than books”. The concluding part of the paper offers some guidelines with the aim to help Croatian libraries to become recognizable as innovative organizations which support the development of the Croatian society in general.
