Abstract
By tracing the development of Croatian dialects in their immediate
contexts, Croatian dialectology has demonstrated that the influence of
migrations on Croatian varieties has been considerable. These varieties, in turn, provide a lot of information on the migrations themselves. It has become evident that we are faced with significant linguistic continuity – much larger than commonly imagined – but that migrations should by no means be ignored. This paper studies three Croatian dialects as the most representative examples of migrations in the Croatian language: the southwest Istrian dialect from the Čakavian group, the west Štokavian dialect, and the lower Sutla dialect from the Kajkavian group.
