Abstract

A need to study possible connections between the Ukrainian and Croatian continua is brought about not only by the genetic relationship between these languages but also by discussions about an eastern Slavic element in the southern Slavic glottogenesis. Premised on spatial attesations, the Slavic Linguistic Atlas enables us to ascertain isoglossic connections between the Slavic dialectal languages. Validity of information and reliability of such isoglosses are much higher as compared with the isoglosses delineated with the help of dictionaries, primarly of literary languages. The Atlas’s maps reflect a series of Ukrainian-Croatian isolexes. Some of those isolexes connect, in addition to Ukrainian and Croatian, some other dialectal languages. A number of the isolexes as found in the Atlas has been expanded with the help of other linguogeographical sources, i.e., atlases of other Slavic languages, regional atlases and dialectal dictionaries. All the isoglosses are likely to enhance historical-typological study of the Slavic continuum.
