Abstract

This work deals with three altarpieces on the iconographic theme of the »Assumption« – in the parish Church of St Sebastian (Boštjana) in Slovenia, in the old Franciscan church in Makarska of Pieter de Coster, and in the parish Church of St Barbara in Gornje Vrapče (Zagreb). Through a comparison with some prints it has been established that the painters of these works all used the same model. We are here dealing with an etching of Paulus Pontius of 1624, which conveyed the Rubens »Assumption of the Virgin« of 1618, done for the main altar of Notre Dame-de-la-Chapelle in Brussels. In his print, Pontius changed the orientation, added a Christ motif, and changed the upper edge into an arch, which are the differentiating elements for the identification of works that used it as a model.
