Abstract

The painting of the Last Judgment in the Franciscan church of St. Catherine in Kreševo was attributed to Baldassare d’Anna, »the little painter of Venetian epigonic mannerism«, as he was called by Grgo Gamulin in 1977, on the basis of the artist’s signature, before the exhibitions Franjevci Bosne i Hercegovine na raskršću kultura i civilizacija/Bosnian and Herzegovinian Franciscans at the Crossroads of Cultures and Civilizations (1987.- 1989.). The painting was also recorded by the chronicle of the Kreševo Monastery in 1986 as »old”, so it is most likely that it was originally commissioned by the Franciscans. The painting of the Immaculate Conception with the Lauretan Symbols, St. Stephen the Protomartyr, and the donor Stjepan Dragojlović (1621.) in the collection of the Franciscan monastery of St. John (Ivo) the Baptist in Kraljeva Sutjeska has been so far considered a work by the donor, Stjepan Dragojlović. On the basis of comparative material and of date from literature about a lost signature the author attributes the painting to Baldassare d’Anna, with some reservations due to heavy preservation work undertaken before the above mentioned exhibitions about which there is no documentation available.
