Abstract
Lymphedema is a progressive, chronic swelling of a part of the body that results from non-working or damaged lymphatic vessels/lymph nodes due to various causes, in developed countries mostly due to malignancy, and in developing countries due to infection. It can be associated with chronic venous insuficiency or other systemic diseases. In these cases, it is referred to as secondary lymphedema. Primary lymphedema is rare and can be present at birth or later in life, resulting from congenital abnormality of the lymphatic system. In the last few years, a new classiication has been developed, dividing primary lymphedema according to phenotypes and in the same cases by genetics where the genes are known.
