Abstract

Eating disorders, particularly anorexia and bulimia nervosa, are complex illnesses with behavioural problems and an obsessive preoccupation with the control of eating and weight. No accurate epidemiological data on the number of patients in Croatia are available, but 35,000 to 45,000 people are estimated to suffer from an eating disorder. This article presents a brief overview of eating disorders with a focus on their early diagnosis. It also briefly presents the basic approach to diagnosis and treatment in line with new guidelines. General practitioners have an important role in recognising eating disorders, and in coordinating and monitoring their treatment.
