Abstract

In the second half of the 19th century, many significant names appeared in the area of school education on the territory of the March of Istria (the Cisleithania area). They included Vinko Rubeša, a teacher from Kastav. He completed the teacher school in Cappodistria in 1886, as did most other Istrian teachers during the era. He mostly served in Kastav, until his death in 1908. He took an active part in the operation of the Croatian Library in Kastav, the voluntary fire brigade and the tambourine society “Istarska vila”, and also wrote for "Novi list", "Hrvatska domovina", "Crvena Hrvatska" in Dubrovnik, "Narodni list" in Zadar, "Narodni list" in Opatija, "Kvarner" in Rijeka, the student calendar "Jorgovan", and for the Annual Report on the Primary Schools Subject to the School Council in Kastav published by the Local School Council in Kastav.
