Abstract

The first part of the article discusses the understanding and exercising the apostolate in women’s religious communities in the USA in relation to the ecclesiological framework, spiritua lity of the time and needs of society up to the Second Vatican Council.
In the second part of the article, on the basis of the same criteria, the authors investigate and present the main lines of changes in selfunderstanding of religious life and mission after the Second Vatican Council as well as the American nuns’ activities in the spirit of the Gospel in postmodern society. The study draws on relevant literature and in the second part also on the results of empirical researches on the apostolate of women’s religious orders in the USA.
