Abstract

The paper on the Fontanella Trust is based on the study of the documents kept at the Archives of the Zadar Diocese and the State Archives in Zadar, relating to the trust that Carlo Fontanella Battisti intended to activate in Zemunik in 1864 with the aim of teaching young men from the surroundings of Zadar agricultural skills, and concrete application of these skills in rational land cultivation. This, according to Fontanella, should have improved the quality of life, taking into consideration substantial shortage of goods, famine and poverty in Dalmatia in the 19th and early 20th centuries. Based on an insight into the documentation kept at the said archives, we will follow the chronological development and establishment of the Fontanella Trust, or rather the relationship of the state and church authorities towards the Trust; finally, we will become able to understand why the Fontanella Trust started operating four decades after it had been established, when the Trappist monks arrived to Zemunik. The paper studies the period between 1864 and 1893 – in the latter year, the contract with the Trappists was signed, and this order overtook the Trust.
