Abstract

The author describes the sequence of events in the area of Gacko districts from December 1941 to mid-May 1942. Given the context, this six-month period makes an unique thematic whole during which the power of the Independent State of Croatia in this region was threatened first by Chetnik forces that came into the district of Gacko from the area of the district of Foča in early January 1942, and then from Partisan forces which gradually spread their influence from the direction of Montenegro. In the second half of January, in the Serbian villages in the district of Gacko the confrontation of the Chetniks and the Partisans starded and was won by the Partisans. After that, the Partisans continuously strengthened, and manifested their strenght with an attack on Borač. The intervention of the Italian amry prevented the complete takeover of the district by the Partisans. After the Italian campaign, the Partisans were weakened, and then completely disappeared from the district of Gacko and its wider area.
