Abstract

The function of piston rings in internal combustion engines is versatile and depends on the type of piston ring. There are compression and scraper rings which are exposed to different tribological processes that are described in this paper, and because of them different types of defects appear in the exploitation and functionality of piston rings. Occurrences that appear because of wear and friction are described, such as microwelding and scruffing on the surface of the piston rings. Also, there are mentioned malfunctions, just as sticking, fluttering and breaking. By avoiding these malfunctions and effects of tribology, there can be made a large contribution in optimizing fuel consumption, engine function and increase in the power of internal combustion engines.
