Abstract

This paper presents the methodology of selecting a waste disposal centre in the case of Makarska Riviera (centre). The selection is based on the multi-criteria hierarchical procedure. When selecting an optimal location the basic characteristics of the area are taken into account: climate, geological, geomorphological, hydrogeological, hydrological and sociological features, and protected areas, as well as the existing state. In the first step, by using default elimination criteria in the geographic information system (GIS), six potential areas for the construction of the local centre were identified. In the second step, using the multi-criteria analysis, performed by using PROMETHEE method, potential locations were ranked through three different preference scenarios. The analysis has shown that a local centre could be realized in the wider area of the Makarska Riviera. The used methodology has proven to be effective and reliable, and as such can be recommended for implementation.
