Abstract

Death, and then? Salvatore Natoli is convinced; faithful people know, they will have a new life and impatiently wait for it. Natoli´s opinion seems to be questionable. It would be better to talk about hope than about knowledge of life after death. Why? Because the answer is beyond our objectifying faculties. It is proved by the fact that there is no substantive to indicate it, but only a substantivized preposition: hereafter. The hereafter is therefore an eschatological place, which eludes our faculties of rationalization. We can´t know it but only hope that it somehow exists. Even religious traditions, which have always presented images of the hereafter, give no ultimate answer. Religious speech about hereafter seems not to be informative, but rather symbolic and performative. It offers no objectifying knowledge because the hereafter eludes any objectifying discourse. It rather offers suggestions for a right action and life through images of hope.
