Abstract
Metabolic encephalopathies may be important complications of many diseases in patients treated at intensive care units. The term metabolic encephalopathies encompass a large variety of different conditions of the brain. Neurologic signs of metabolic encephalopathies, ancillary tests, differential diagnosis, etiology, pathophysiology and treatment are discussed in this review. Metabolic encephalopathies are usually multifactorial in origin and play an important role not only as diseases per se but also for monitoring the severity of decompensating organ functions during deteriorating primary diseases.
