Abstract

The article contains data from the work of the
Greek writer Phlegon on the bodies in the Artemis
Cavern near Split, which had ribs exceeding 11 cubits
(ca. 4.5 m) in length. This record is classified as a
“paradoxographical” type of text. There is a discussion
of the authenticity of this data, i.e., whether it is one of
a series of examples of sensationalism in this type of
ancient literature or a somewhat realistic report which
suggests an archaeological, or rather paleontological
find. Such finds in the ancient world were sometimes
interpreted through the prism of mythology.
