Abstract

The paper deals with an epidemic poisoning with cooking oil, which took place in Spain in 1981, known as toxic oil syndrome (TOS). The clinical course of the illness with characteristic symptoms in acute and chronic phases is described. Chemical analyses pointed at fatty acid anilides as a probable cause of poisoning. As toxicological analyses confirmed only partly the toxic properties of anilides it remains to discover some other substances which would complete the picture of TOS pathogenesis.
