Abstract

The fishpond Končanica is the oldest and one of the larger fishponds in Croatia. It is positioned on the left bank of the Ilova river. The first research of the fishpond lasted from 1985 to 2001; during that period, breeding colony of herons was not recorded. With new research, nesting colonies of Grey Heron Ardea cinerea, Night Heron Nycticorax nycticorax, Little Egret Egretta garzetta, Purple Heron Ardea purpurea and Squacco Heron Ardeolla ralloides have been discovered. Nesting pairs of Grey and Night Heron have occupied the most of the colony. Except for the breeding colony of herons, one breeding pair of Greylag Goose Anser anser and Red–crested Pochard Netta rufina was also observed in fishpond. Considering the period that had passed since the last survey, new research is necessary to determine avifauna and the number of nesting birds.
