Abstract
The aim of investigation was to determine the frequency of extra-articular rheumatism among women workers in a shoe factory, and to relate it to years of service and the age of the examinees. The sample consisted of two hundred workers selected at random: 100 from the shoe factory and 100 controls. All examinees were taken a medical history and were physically examined. Eighty per cent of the examinees were found to have extra-articular rheumatism. The percentage in the comparative group was only 26. Among women working at sewing machine the prevalence of the disease was three times higher than among controls. Ambient conditions (temperature, light, noise, dust. harmful chemicals) did not prove to be risk factors. On the other hand working conditions and the nature of job (micro-trauma, constant activity of the same muscles, repetition of identical movements, psychic tension caused by shift work, irregular body posture) were found to be connected with the etiology of the disease.
