Abstract

In the striki»g architect«ral progress after the Croatian-
Hungarian Treaty i n 1869, nu>nerous architects and
civil engi»eers from Trieste ii'ere i»vo/ved in the town-pla»
»ing and building activities in Rijeka. Isidor Wauchnig and
dr Filibert Bazaring u~ere the fi~st to come, fol/owed by
Giacomo Zammattio and Emilio Amrosini about 1885, having
substantially inf luenced the development of high htstorism
a»d Secession through their oun project of ficres anrl
construction companies. After World War I , th e bui lding
activities were stopped, until 1934. Two ver y impor ta»t
buildings date from that period of ti>ne, i.e. Rau/ Puhaly's
Small Skyscrap er and Big Skyscra per designed by the
Nordio dr Fran«li Atelier. Besides the architects mentio>žed
abo>'e, sculptors fro»t Tr ieste /Rizzo, Mayr/ n>ere also
ae>ive in Rijeka and thetr ivorks have been preserved o»
the fronts of Secessionist palaces and on t tombstones in the Kozala.
