A REVIEW OF SECESSION AND SYMBOLISM

Abstract
The terms Secession and Symbolism have been alternatively
used in the interprećation of visual ar t phenomena
at the t u rning of c ent«ries, necessitati>xg a divergence
of these categorial artistic terms t o be elucidated.
Secession is a s t y l istic espression implying a p r ecisely
deftned morphologic structure in al l vis«al ar t disciplines
(Gesamtkunstwerk), some of i t s fundamental features being
wavy lines, flatness and stylization, emphasized decorativity
and asymmetry. Th«s, Secession represents a mediator
betueen impressionism and expressionis>n. Symbolism
is not a style but a universal Europena trend in l i terature,
which has no expressive-sćylistic coherence in»isual
terms, utilizing varying stylistic tools adjusted to i t s tende
»c>es trl expresslo>ž. The si '»žbollsttc arć, ivl tlclž ts al so
essential, is not r est r icted t o mer e perception but t e»ds
to create pha»tasies stuffed u~ith the world of sy>nbols.
