Abstract

This paper deals with the appearance of neorealism
in fhe Slovene visual arts in the mid-twenties. Analysis of
social and ideological motives is related to the appearance
of a ne>v way, thereby using those facts about neorealism
and other»new rea/isms~ in Europe that indicate this phenon>
enon to be part of the outu>ard appeal for order ( rappel
a 1' ordre). Among the documents on neorealisnz, early contemporavy
criticism in par ticular reveals that thi s visual
direction, as compared to expressionism, uas accepted to
a considerably greatev extent. Nou >adays, however, it has
been recognized that the reception of expressionism was
obstructed not only by its forma/, but primarily by its political
and social redicalism. In contrast to it, neorealism is
characterized by its compromising nature corresponding to
the sosio-politica/ pasition in the >nid-twenties, characterized
by te>nporary economic stabilization and optimistic vision
of the development of the midd/e-c/nss society. Thus, the
analysis of some best knou n u orks of neorealism points to their compromising character.
